Charity Island, Michigan
Charity Island, Michigan Do you want to go away on an island where you will the chance to be in touch with Mother Nature at the same time relaxing? Then Charity Island, Michigan is the place for you. Charity Island, Michigan is one of the few places in the United States that is included managed by the United States Federal Fish and Wildlife Service. More than eighty percent of the Charity Island in Michigan was obtained by the Federal Fish and Wildlife Service in 1997. Charity Island in Michigan is part of the system of the Michigan Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Charity Island, Michigan is located in the middle of the Saginaw Bay, which is in the waters of Lake Huron in Michigan. The Charity Island, Michigan is the biggest island in the Saginaw Bay, and is situated close to the middle of the bay. Charity Island has a land mass of close to 300 acres and has an approximate three miles of shoreline. Charity Island, Michigan was named by the mariners of the Lake Huron for its position in the lake. The island is said to have been placed by God through charity amidst the city of Au Gres, Michigan and “The Thumb” (a region in Michigan named because its lower peninsula is shaped like a thumb), at the entry of the Saginaw Bay. As a matter of fact, Charity Island, Michigan consists of two islands, Big Charity Island and Little Charity Island. The Charity Island is mostly surrounded by mixed hardwood tree varieties and the island is home to an assortment of plants which includes rare varieties. On the island, there is an old lighthouse. The light station was erected in 1857, but was later abandoned when a “state of the art” light vessel named “Gravelly Shore Light” was completed in 1939. Charity Island is said to have been quarried for chert (a fine-grained cryptocrystalline sedimentary rock that is rich in silica that may possibly hold small fossils) by the Native Americans. The northeastern side of the Charity Island yields way to limestone bedrock in the bay. The neighboring island of the Big Charity Island is called the Little Charity Island. Little Charity Island has a land mass of 0.02 km² (5.4 acre). The small island is part of the Arenac County in the State of Michigan. It is also part of the system of the Michigan Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Getting to Charity Island, Michigan requires a boat (you can either rent or use the island’s ferry service). However, there is only one accommodation in Charity Island, the Charity Island Lodge. But if you do not want to stay on Charity Island, you can still experience the island’s beauty on a day trip by staying on the nearby Au Gres or East Tawas. |
